Our Conservation Programs

Strategic initiatives protecting Manitoba's diverse ecosystems and wildlife for future generations.

Our Programs

Targeted conservation strategies addressing Manitoba's most critical habitat needs

๐ŸŒพ

๐ŸŒพ Prairie Conservation

Manitoba's native prairies are among the most threatened ecosystems in North America. Less than 1% of original tallgrass prairie remains. Our Prairie Conservation Program works to protect, restore, and manage these vital grasslands that support hundreds of plant and animal species.

  • Acquisition and protection of native prairie remnants
  • Restoration of degraded grasslands through native seeding
  • Grazing management partnerships with ranchers
  • Research on prairie ecology and species populations
  • Education and outreach to raise awareness of prairie values

๐ŸŒŠ Wetland Restoration

Wetlands are nature's kidneysโ€”filtering water, controlling floods, and providing critical habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife. Manitoba has lost an estimated 70% of its historic wetlands. Our program focuses on reversing this loss through restoration and protection.

  • Wetland restoration and reconstruction projects
  • Protection of existing wetlands through conservation agreements
  • Water quality monitoring and research
  • Partnerships with Ducks Unlimited Canada and other organizations
  • Engaging landowners in wetland stewardship

๐ŸฆŒ Wildlife Protection

Healthy wildlife populations depend on healthy habitats. Our Wildlife Protection Program focuses on species at risk and the ecosystems they depend on. We use science-based approaches to monitor populations and implement recovery strategies.

  • Species at risk monitoring and recovery planning
  • Habitat enhancement projects (nest boxes, brush piles, etc.)
  • Predator-prey dynamics research
  • Collaboration with Manitoba Conservation and Climate
  • Citizen science programs for wildlife monitoring

๐Ÿค Community Engagement

Conservation succeeds when communities are involved and supportive. Our Community Engagement Program builds relationships with landowners, Indigenous communities, schools, and the general public to foster a conservation ethic across Manitoba.

  • Landowner stewardship programs and conservation agreements
  • Indigenous partnership and knowledge integration
  • School education programs and field trips
  • Volunteer events and habitat restoration days
  • Public workshops and speaker series

๐Ÿ”ฌ Research & Monitoring

Effective conservation requires sound science. Our Research & Monitoring Program conducts and supports scientific studies to understand ecosystem dynamics, measure conservation outcomes, and inform adaptive management strategies.

  • Long-term ecological monitoring of conservation areas
  • Collaborative research with universities and government scientists
  • Data management and sharing through Manitoba Conservation Data Centre
  • Monitoring of climate change impacts on ecosystems
  • Publication of research findings to advance conservation science

๐ŸŒ Climate Resilience

Climate change is already affecting Manitoba's ecosystems. Our Climate Resilience Program focuses on building adaptive capacity into landscapes and helping wildlife and habitats adjust to changing conditions through nature-based solutions.

  • Carbon sequestration assessment of conserved lands
  • Climate-adaptive restoration techniques
  • Connectivity conservation to enable species movement
  • Wetland and peatland protection for carbon storage
  • Integration of climate considerations into all programs
